Infrared Pro — Door Magnet Seal Is Peeling Off the Glass

Over time, one of the magnetic door strips can start to lift or peel away from the glass. It's a normal wear item and an easy fix at home. The lifting usually happens gradually as repeated door use and the constant heat-up and cool-down cycle work on the adhesive underneath — and it tends to show up sooner in high-use or commercial settings.

What you'll need

  • Clear double-sided high-temperature mounting tape, about ¼" wide. Ordinary double-sided tape won't survive the heat — use a heat-rated tape such as an automotive or weatherstripping grade. Searching for “clear ¼-inch high-temp double-sided mounting tape” will turn up suitable options.
  • Isopropyl alcohol and a clean cloth or paper towel.

Reattaching the strip

  1. Remove the strip. Peel the affected magnetic strip fully off the glass. If it's only partly lifted, take the whole strip off so you can reapply it cleanly.
  2. Clean the glass edge. Wipe the area of glass where the strip sits with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry completely. Any leftover residue or moisture will keep the new tape from bonding.
  3. Apply the tape. Cut a piece to length, peel the backing from one side only, press it firmly onto the glass edge, and run your finger along it to set the bond.
  4. Reattach the strip. Peel off the remaining backing and press the magnetic strip back into place, using firm, even pressure along its full length.

Tip: work from one end to the other, pressing as you go, rather than laying the whole strip down at once. That keeps out air pockets and stops the strip drifting out of line.

Let it set: wait a few minutes before opening and closing the door repeatedly. The bond gets stronger with pressure and time.
