Infrared Pro — Preventing Mold & Moisture Buildup

Your Infrared Pro is built for heat and sweat — but standing water and surfaces that stay damp will shorten its life. Moisture soaking into the wood is the main cause of staining, swelling, and eventually mold over time. The good news: preventing it takes under five minutes after each session.

Coming from a cold plunge or wet area

Pairing the sauna with a cold plunge is one of the best routines in wellness, but stepping in dripping wet carries a lot of water into the cabin. This is the highest-risk situation for moisture buildup — and worth taking seriously in a commercial setting where it happens all day.

  • Towel off before you step in. Thirty seconds of drying off dramatically cuts how much water ends up on the floor and bench.
  • Use a floor mat. A mat catches drips and keeps water off the wood floor. Keep it in place for every session.
  • Put a towel on the bench. A towel or bench cover between you and the wood protects the surface and makes cleanup easier.

Wipe down the interior after every session

This is the single most effective habit for extending the life of your sauna. With a clean, dry cloth, go over the bench, backrests, side rests, and floor — anywhere the body was in contact. It takes about two minutes.

Why it matters: moisture left to soak into the wood leads to discoloration, swelling, and mold far sooner than normal use would. In commercial settings with back-to-back sessions, treat this as essential.

Leave the door ajar after use

When the session is over and the cabin is cooling, prop the door open a few inches. This lets air circulate and moisture escape instead of condensing on the walls and floor as the temperature drops.

Commercial settings: make it a routine

For facilities running multiple contrast sessions a day, moisture management belongs in your turnover procedure between guests — not just the end-of-day clean.

  • Post a towel-off reminder at the sauna entrance.
  • Keep dry towels and a clean cloth within reach.
  • Make a quick wipe-down part of every guest turnover.
  • Leave the door open between sessions to air out the cabin.

A few minutes of consistent upkeep after each session does more for your sauna than any deep-cleaning schedule.

Noticing early discoloration? Light sanding with fine-grit sandpaper can lift surface staining before it sets — see Infrared Sauna Cleaning & Care for wood-care details. Questions? Email info@calore.ca or call us anytime.
